| Safe Sitter is a national, not-for-profit US organization, founded in 1980 by an Indianapolis pediatrician, Dr. Patricia A. Keener. Safe Sitter is preparing "Better sitters today...Better parents tomorrow." The history of Safe Sitter began with a tragedy; the accidental death of a nurse's young child while in the care of an adult babysitter. In reflecting on her colleague's loss, Dr. Keener realized that the scene in that emergency room happened too often. Her response to the tragedy was to envision a solution. Safe Sitter was born. Safe Sitter is a medically accurate babysitter training course designed to reach young people age 11 to 13 before they begin actively babysitting. The 13-hour course teaches what to expect when dealing with children, how to avoid difficult situations, and how to solve problems if they occur. The primary objective of Safe Sitter is to reduce the number of accidental deaths among children, especially while in the care of a babysitter. Perhaps someone in the UK might like to take this up! | ||
